About this tool
YouTube thumbnails have two hard requirements: 1280 × 720 pixels and a file size under 2 MB. Missing either one gets the upload rejected, and the 2 MB limit is the one that catches people out because it depends on the quality setting as much as the dimensions.
This resizer sets the dimensions and encodes at a quality you control, then reports whether the result is inside the limit. Choose Fill to centre-crop and cover the frame with no distortion, or Fit to letterbox the image inside the frame with a background colour of your choice.

Frequently asked questions
What is the correct YouTube thumbnail size?
1280 × 720 pixels, 16:9 aspect ratio, under 2 MB. A minimum width of 640 pixels is also accepted, but 1280 is recommended for clarity on large displays.
Why was my thumbnail rejected?
Almost always the file size. At 1280 × 720 a JPEG quality of 92 percent is usually well under 2 MB, but a busy photographic image can exceed it. Lower the quality until the readout shows you are inside the limit.
Should I use Fill or Fit?
Fill when your image is close to 16:9 or the subject is centred, because it uses the whole frame. Fit when the image is a different shape and nothing can be cropped away — the letterbox bars will be filled with your chosen background colour.
Can I make a thumbnail without a video?
